How Many Pages Do I Need for My Poster?

Enter the poster size you want and your paper. The calculator subtracts your printer's unprintable margin and the overlap you need for taping, then counts the pages.

Enter a poster size, then choose Count pages.

The formula

Usable width per sheet = paper width − 2 × margin − overlap. Pages across = ⌈(poster width − overlap) ÷ usable width⌉, and the same for height. Total = across × down.

Example

A 24 × 36 in poster on portrait Letter with 6 mm margins and 5 mm overlap: usable about 7.83 × 10.33 in, giving 4 × 4 = 16 pages.

Finding your printer margin

Most home printers can't print to the very edge of the page. Check the printer's specifications or print a test page with a border. 6 mm (about ¼ inch) is the tiler's default, but borderless-capable printers can use less.

Frequently asked questions

How many sheets does a poster need?

Enter the poster width and height, the paper, the margin, and the overlap, then choose Count pages. You get pages across times pages down, for portrait and for landscape.

Does a larger overlap use more pages?

It can. The overlap repeats a strip on the next sheet instead of covering new poster area, so a wide overlap may add a row or a column.

Which paper orientation should I use?

Print the orientation with the smaller page count. The tool on the home page supports both portrait and landscape.
